A IX d     Carolus CLAEYS

fs. Engelbertus Claeys (A VIII a) and Maria Theresia De Smet

° Kaprijke 25-7-1844
x Kaprijke 27-1-1869 Clementia Antheunis
† Lembeke 7-3-1937

After the death of their second son Carolus at age 5 Engelbert and Marie-Thérèse wanted to give their newborn also the first name Carolus.

He was born on 25-7-1844 and according to the military records he was the tallest of the family: 1.655 meters (5.4').  He had an oval face, small forehed, blue eyes, a small nose, a small mouth, a round chin and blond hair.

On 27 January 1869 he was married in Kaprijke to Clementia Antheunis who was born there on 16 December 1842 and whose job at that time was maid servant.  For about 5 years they lived in with Carolus' mother but on 6-6-1874 they moved to the Vrouwstraat, 48. (Vrouw = woman.)  In 1880 we find them back in the Wauterstraat 11: that's the first house on the left if we come from the Beekstraat ("beek" = stream) to go to the Fortjen (small fortress).  Carolus was then farm labourer.  Later they moved to the Beekstraat in Kaprijke, where now the widow Inghels lives (now house number 3) and in 1919 they went to live in Lembeke.  Clementia died in Kaprijke on 15-2-1917 and Carolus survived her for 20 more years.  Hij was 92 when he passed away in Lembeke on 7 March 1937.

Clementia gave birth to a total of 12 children:

Jules Claeys died there on 24-10-1943.
After his death Marie-Louise went to live in with her daughter, Mrs. Julius Williams in Cambridge, the seat of Henry County.  She died in St-Francis Hospital, Kewanee, Illinois on 26-1-1944.
They had 7 children. Two of them had passed away before their parents.  Here follow the name and place of residence of their five surviving children.

Here we have Julius' funeral card and your find Louise's funeral card here.
We wish to thank Martine Bruggeman and especially Hans Van Landschoot for most of the information on Jules and Marie-Louise.  Here and here on his website "Find a Grave" we found the information that had been published in The Geneseo Republic Newspaper of 29 October 1943 and of 4 February 1944, after the death of Marie-Louise.  We would also like to thank Mrs. Judi McDowell, a RAOGK volunteer who found these newspaper clippings for Hans (and of course thanks to Hans also for us).
