This monument was erected on 3 September 1972
to honour the men of the First Polish Panzer Division
who liberated Aalter in September 1944.

On 9 September 1944
J. Czerwiec, W. Debicki, I. Kowalczyk, W. Kukulka, A. Popiolek,
J. Rozenstrauch, T. Swiderski, W. Zolynski died here for our freedom.

And on 10 September 1944
E. Baran, J. Budnik, E. Dembek, A. Krzak, Misiewicz,
J. Nycz, J. Ruzanski, C. Wenderlich died here for our freedom.

Contrary to all promises by top Western politicians Poland itself then went through a long hellish period of Soviet oppression and exploitation.
