The horse drawn carts laden high with hay or sheaves of wheat, oats or barley
went in through the big doors to be unloaded.
The doors on the other side didn't have to be so tall because the carts always left empty.
High up in some of these high doors there used to be a hole smaller than a dinner plate.
Year after year the swallows would return to nest in the barn
and fly at breakneck speed into and out of the barn through those holes.
Now the holes in the barn doors have all but disappeared and
in many regions the swallow has become litterally a rara avis.
